How Grams to Cups Works

Converting grams to cups requires knowing the density of the specific ingredient, because a cup is a measure of volume while grams measure weight. A cup of flour and a cup of sugar weigh very different amounts, which is why a single "grams to cups" ratio does not exist — every ingredient needs its own conversion factor.

Our converter stores a grams_per_cup value for each ingredient in the database, sourced from common kitchen measurement references used by bakers and recipe developers. When you enter a number of grams, the calculator divides that value by the ingredient's grams-per-cup to produce the equivalent cup volume.

For example, all-purpose flour weighs approximately 120 grams per cup. So 100 grams of flour is roughly 0.83 cups, while 100 grams of sugar (about 200 g/cup) is approximately 0.50 cups. Same weight, very different volume — this is exactly why a dedicated per-ingredient converter is essential for accurate recipe results.
